Physical self care is one of the most important forms of self-care, as it involves things such as brushing your teeth in the morning, taking a warm shower, and getting some exercise in.
One of the best ways to practice physical self-care is by doing something that we often take for granted even though we do it everyday, sleep! Getting enough rest is an essential part of our lives as sleep plays an important role in our physical health. It is not only involved in the healing and repair of our heart and blood vessels but it can also help with other things like getting sick less often, reducing stress, helping brain function, and keeping one’s weight under control. For adults a minimum of 7-9 hours of sleep every night is something that we should all prioritize.
Along with getting enough sleep, eating well and staying hydrated are important factors of physical self-care.
Lastly, exercising helps release feel good hormones in our system in addition to tapping into other areas of self care, like emotional or spiritual. The most important thing about exercise is finding one that brings joy and peace into your life. You should find an exercise or movement that brings more into your life. If exercise is stressful or guilt-ridden, then that is not going to help you get that self care joy and peace that we are looking for.
Start small and be consistent. Remember even a baby step is a step in the right direction.
