Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. [Matthew 17:20]

  • Eating is meant to be pleasurable! This is something that is often forgotten when we are trying to diet, especially when diets may tell us to have foods we don’t want or don’t like. If we do have the foods we want, then we feel so guilty about eating them that it takes away from the pleasure of eating it anyway.

When eating intuitively, no foods are off limits; therefore, we can eat the foods we truly want.

The satisfaction factor has to do with noticing and appreciating the taste and texture of food, but also the environment in which you’re eating.

When you can bring the pleasure and joy back to eating, you can truly feel satisfied after a meal and move on and enjoy the rest of your life, rather than continue to eat for other reasons.

By honoring the satisfaction factor, we can more accurately assess our fullness, limit cravings, and potentially choose more of the nutrients we need.

Try to take some time this week to slow down, enjoy your meals, and key in on that satisfaction factor!

  • Do you constantly feel like you are at war with food?

Are you constantly trying to avoid thinking of food?

The third principle of intuitive eating is finally making peace with food and realizing that food is not the enemy. When we finally make peace with food, we give ourselves permission to eat freely without obsessive thoughts or feelings of shame and guilt.

By making peace with food, you will get rid of the idea that there are “good” and “bad” foods, and begin to feel unconditional permission to eat what you crave and want. Stop feeling guilt or shame in relation to food choices, and learn what food you actually like and what foods make you feel good.

What I am trying to say is that when we give ourselves permission to eat ALL foods and allow them to become normalized in our life, it takes away that intense desire and urgency, which allows us to eat more mindfully.

With all of this being said, we understand that making peace with food can be complicated and confusing.

  • The ability to have fun with food is possible when you learn to distance yourself from the moral language like: good foods, bad foods, and guilty foods. Once you start to view all foods as morally neutral, it becomes a lot easier to find ways to build connections around and have fun with food.

With that being said, it is possible to start having fun with food again. Let’s dive in with six ways to start this process.

1. Ditch the food labels: The way we talk about food matters. When we start to label food as “good” or “bad,” it can start to translate in our brain as “I am good for having this food” or “I am bad for eating this.” Doing so can negatively impact your relationship with food.

2. Incorporate flexibility into your schedule: building some flexibility to your schedule can help open up new opportunities for having fun with food!

3. Brainstorm flavors, cuisines, textures. Make a list!: By building flexibility into your weekly routine, you have the opportunity to try different types of food.

4. Say yes!: Saying yes to spontaneity, such as parties with friends, and family gatherings that involve food can be a great step towards integrating more fun into this process.

5. Get curious and experiment: Try something new! Even if you are at your favorite restaurant, try an experiment of ordering whatever sounds the best to you at that moment or something you have yet to try.

6. Practice self-compassion: remember, you are not doing anything wrong by enjoying food. Getting pleasure and enjoyment from food is natural and can be a fun experience.

Food is not the enemy, food can be fun. We understand that it is a lot easier said than done, especially when you may have diet culture breathing down your neck. This is a process and doesn’t just change overnight.

Go easy on yourself as you move through this journey and know that we are here to help you.
